Still hanging around...............

I am so close to finished now that I have the biggest grin on my face! Frustrating though, I found the red bias tape I wanted to hem the dress with (I have a thing for B&W with red) and if it wasnt for the fact I was 2 1/2 ft short I'd have been finished last night :( Another test of patience I think, especially as I cant get any more til tomorrow, bah!

Still, this will give me time to read and re-read my handbag instructions wont it ;)

Hanging Around

Well I'm here to kill a bit of time. I've really enjoyed making my dress so far (and have plans for another 3 the same shape) but 24hrs to allow a bias to set!? come on, you're kidding right! Anyone who knows me knows that patience isn't my strongest point, even if I am working on it, but there again, I shouldn't be in too much of a hurry to finish - I havent even got the buttons yet lol! Here's a lil sneak of the WIP anyway :)

W-I-P

Well as a return to the art of the needle I have decided to start with McCalls pattern no M5292, a nice simple (?) vintage-esque dress (variation C). After an entire afternoon reading, cutting, pressing and pinning I finally have it put together on Bettie (my dahling model), and d'ya know, I'm damn pleased with the result lol. Of course I'll have a play about with the pieces over the next day or two to get things 'just so' but all in all not too shabby a job even if I do say so myself. It was fun rediscovering the fun of personal tailoring, but not so much the back ache it brings :S Well I may have something to show for my efforts by the end of the week - woohoo! Start as you mean to go on eh ;)

Does Size Really Matter?

D'ya know I have been happily going along picking up bits from the high street that 'fit' my look and am rather pleased to have settled as a size 12 (even in these size 0 days) but now I am a little disturbed :S according to 'vintage sizing' I am an 18!! Now I was never bothered by size labels before so why does it bother me when the figure jumps up higher? But when you take into account that Marilyn Monroe was a vintage 16 its not really so bad after all (and well, it is easter, need I say more ;) haha)

Now a question for you, what exactly constitutes an 'Hourglass Figure' ? Is there an ideal inch difference or is it as long as your waist is smaller than the hip/bust? Answers on a postcard to.............

New Beginnings

Well I guess a good place to start would be for me to intorduce myself no? My name is RetroChick and this is my little world. I have always been a fan of 1940s/1950s styling but have never had the chance to indulge myself until now. After finding (to my distress) how expensive a lot of repro clothing could be I decided it would be a good time to get into dressmaking myself and am also hoping to get into costume construction. Be warned people...the word 'corset' may appear more than once in this little world of mine too, I am more than a little addicted to them as I am with all 'foundation garments' ;)

Well thats just about all you need to know for now I guess so I'll shoot off

C'ya!
